I used a radiator flush on this system and flushed it until the system ran clear. It runs cool like a typical AMC six of its era. I used a 180 degree F thermostat so I am sure it is getting up to the proper engine temperature. This mess of rusty water on the ground all came from the coolant recovery reservoir that catches the overflow water from the radiator. I could not leave it dirty to re-contaminate the cooling system. It cleaned up nicely and was reinstalled. Those chunks on the ground are globs of silt and rust that had settled in the bottom of the reservoir.
