New rubber caps seal out moisture and dirt from the heater control cables as shown by the yellow arrow. I temporarily placed the old rubber fuel hose on the fuel line so it would be more clearly visible. I will put on a new rubber fuel line hose when I remember to actually purchase it. Old fuel line hoses on aging VWs are refered to as "Hitler's Revenge" because fuel leaks from these hoses left many a VW burned up on the side of the road.
