67 Beetle Filter Installation
I drilled a hole in the metal deflector plate so the 1/8 NPT elbow will pass through and deliver the filtered oil below the deflector plate to prevent motor oil from being blown out the engine vent at high speed. Since most air cooled VW engines vent at the cap, adding fresh oil here above the deflector plate can cause oil to be blown out of the engine at high speed. The deflector plate is there to catch oil being slung by the cam gears and engine motion from being blown out. So we make sure to put the return oil supply below the deflector plate using this elbow shown protruding up through a snug hole drilled in the deflector plate by the red arrow.
