67 Beetle Filter Installation
Prior to installing the EaBP-90 By-Pass filter element I need to get one quart of fresh engine oil to fill the filter so the engine won't dry run so long as it fills the filter. I had been using the AMSOIL 0W-30 Signature Series (SSO) motor oil in this car. I felt compelled to drain the old engine oil since it had been operated without any filters and took the opportunity to go to a thicker viscosity motor oil, in this case AMSOIL 20W-50 (ARO). My thinking was the thicker engine oil would make the engine quieter. I couldn't tell any difference personally, so maybe I should have stayed with the 0W-30 (SSO). But the first trip I took in this car after switching to the 20W-50 ARO I got around 42 miles per gallon (highway driving at 60 MPH), so I guess I didn't loose very much mileage if any.
