I was also installing an oil temperature gauge and needed to make sure and think things through. I wanted the sensor for the oil temperature gauge to be in the oil flow going to the By-Pass oil filter so it would pick up the accurate temperature of the engine oil. Note here the sensor protrudes halfway down into the steel "T" fitting I purchased at the hardware store for this installation. The brass "T" fitting that comes with the By-Pass filter kit would not accept the length of the sensor without modification. This steel fitting worked perfectly. I held this up on top of the handle of my floor jack for good contrast.
